well long story short cctv footage is recorded 24/7 and the footage is usually stored for at least 30 days.
when it comes to storing 24hr of footage everyday for 30 days there are sacrifices that needs to be made. so its not that its impossible to have high quality cctv footage. its that storing high quality footage is expensive.
going into the technical details lets look at what makes a video file large
- framerate
- resolution
- bitrate
bitrate + resolution = how much data is held per frame.
the reason why most cctv footage is choppy and low fps is a sacrifice made to increase the resolution
taking phone footage for example
720p footage at 5MB per min
which would usually result in 1GB file within 3.5 hours
its easy to see how this would add up over time
while there are ways to avoid large file size such as encoding the issue with that is the amount of time that it takes to process and encode the footage. at the end of the day the alternatives are too expensive and modern storage solutions has yet to be cheap enough to justify recording at a higher resolution.
